6.25% headline, 3.75% real
Why Is BSN's 6.25% FD Promotion Only Worth 3.75%?
BSN's newest fixed deposit campaign advertises 6.25% per annum. That sounds like the best rate in Malaysia right now. But 6.25% only applies to 60% of your money, and BSN's own worked example puts the real blended return at 3.75%.
Where the 6.25% actually goes
- Minimum placement is RM5,000, split RM3,000 into TD-i and RM2,000 into SSP at the fixed ratio.
- The campaign runs 1 October to 31 December 2026, for a fixed six-month tenure only.
- Placement is branch-only, with TD-i and SSP opened together — no FPX or app option.
The two things that don't make the banner
| BSN's bundle | Hong Leong eFD | OCBC FD-i | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Effective rate | 3.75% p.a. | 3.88% p.a. | 4.05% p.a. |
| Deposit protection | Not PIDM — Government-guaranteed | PIDM, up to RM250,000 | PIDM, up to RM250,000 |
| After maturity | Renews at BSN's 2.05% board rate | Reverts to board rate | Reverts to board rate |
- BSN isn't a PIDM member, so deposits are guaranteed in full by the Government instead, under the 1974 Act.
- Early redemption forfeits all TD-i profit — BSN's own terms call it a full rebate.
BSN's full-guarantee wording comes from the Bank Simpanan Nasional Act 1974 itself: “The repayment of all moneys deposited in the Bank together with interest thereon is guaranteed by the Government.” No RM250,000 cap — but also none of PIDM's independent oversight. What to watch
- 31 Dec 2026This campaign window closes — no word yet on a Q1 2027 successor.
- Your maturity date (6 months on)The TD-i leg auto-renews at BSN's prevailing 2.05% six-month board rate, far below the 3.75% blended campaign rate.
