How NCD Works in Malaysia
Your most valuable car insurance asset — understand it fully.
NCD is yours, not the car's
Your NCD follows you as the owner, not the vehicle. Sell your car — your NCD stays with you.
Transferable between insurers
Switch to any insurer and keep your NCD. Insurers verify via PIAM database using your IC number.
One claim resets it
An at-fault claim resets NCD to 0%. Consider using NCD Protector add-on to preserve it after one claim.
Frequently Asked Questions
Since detariffication in 2017, prices vary by insurer. Generali (formerly AXA Affin) and Berjaya Sompo often offer the lowest premiums. However, cheapest isn't always best — check claims ratings and workshop network. Use our comparison tool and get quotes from at least 3 insurers.
NCD is a discount you earn for not making claims. It starts at 25% after 1 claim-free year and goes up to 55% after 5+ years. NCD is tied to the car owner (not the car) and is transferable between insurers. Protecting your NCD is crucial — one claim can reset it.
Yes — it's one of the most important add-ons for Malaysian drivers. Standard comprehensive insurance does NOT cover flood damage. Given Malaysia's monsoon seasons and flash floods (especially in KL, Johor, Kelantan), special perils coverage is strongly recommended. It typically costs RM50–200 extra per year.
Takaful is Shariah-compliant — contributions go into a shared pool (tabung) and surplus is returned to participants (hibah). Conventional insurance uses a risk-transfer model where premiums go to the insurer. Coverage and premiums are similar. Muslims can choose either; Takaful is the Islamic-preferred option.
Yes. Your NCD belongs to you, not your old insurer. When renewing with a new insurer, provide your IC number and they can verify your NCD with PIAM (Persatuan Insurans Am Malaysia). The NCD percentage will be maintained.
