Founder's Notes,

Raymond Sim

Ever since I was 15, I've always had a strong interest in finance, money or stocks. I was always curious on how the banks work and the concept of money. Savings, interest rates and the stock market were like magic to me.

How could I have bought a stock today and sell it tomorrow for a higher price to earn a profit. Why could I put money in the bank, leave it for a year (fixed deposit) and earn 4%+ interest. I felt like it was a money hack that nobody is really talking about when I was at that young age. The raging interest in finance grew in me and stayed with me, until today - 15 years later.

Learned so much throughout this journey, made millions, lost millions and still growing stronger. Crazy to think of it, since I just started out with about RM10k in savings (angbao saved up and part time jobs). The world of finance is definitely not as magical as I thought it would be but it is still exciting and evolving with new trends emerging - AI technology.

Fast forward to today, I decided to build rates.my to share this journey of finance together with everyone. I'm sure each of us have our own path, our own struggles, and our own wins.

How We Source & Verify Rates

Wherever possible our rates come directly from official sources— banks' own websites and live data feeds, Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM), and Kementerian Kewangan Malaysia — and are refreshed automatically rather than typed by hand:

  Gold— scraped live every morning (around 9:30am MYT) from each provider's published rate: UOB, Maybank, CIMB, RHB, BSN, Bank Islam, Public Bank and Public Gold.
• ⛽
  Petrol — updated weekly from data.gov.my when the Ministry of Finance announces RON95, RON97 and Diesel prices.
• 🏦
  Fixed deposits & savings— reviewed against banks' official rate pages and promotional announcements.

Rates shown are indicativeand can change during the day — always confirm the final rate with the provider before you transact. Spotted something off? Tell us and we'll fix it fast.

Rates.my is independent. Our comparisons and rankings are driven by the published numbers — never by commercial relationships, and no bank can pay to rank higher. Some outbound links may earn us a small referral fee at no extra cost to you, which is what keeps Rates.my free to use.
