Understanding the Ringgit exchange rate
What is a mid-market rate?
The mid-market rate is the midpoint between the buy and sell price on the global currency market — the rate you see quoted in the news or on Google. Banks, money changers and remittance apps all add their own margin on top of it, so the rate you're actually offered will always be a little worse than the mid-market figure shown here.
Getting the best rate when exchanging
Compare a few money changers or your bank's forex counter before exchanging cash — rates can differ meaningfully. For sending money abroad, dedicated remittance apps (e.g. Wise, InstaRem) usually beat traditional bank telegraphic transfers on both the exchange rate and the fee.
Why does the Ringgit move?
MYR moves with Bank Negara's policy rate (OPR), crude oil prices (Malaysia is a net oil exporter), broader emerging-market sentiment, and the US Federal Reserve's own rate decisions. A weaker Ringgit makes imports and overseas spending pricier but helps exporters.
Locking in a rate
If you hold foreign-currency savings and want to convert to Ringgit at a good moment, compare it against parking spare cash in a fixed deposit or high-yield savings account while you wait for a favourable rate.
