The week ahead

Malaysian Finance Calendar: 10–16 August 2026

Three things this week actually touch a Malaysian wallet: Wednesday’s petrol price, Wednesday night’s US inflation number, and Friday’s Q2 GDP. Everything else is noise or next week.

Monday is empty and the weekend is empty. Wednesday carries four separate events, and everything that lands on your wallet happens between Wednesday and Friday.
  • Wednesday sets your petrol price. New RON95, RON97 and diesel prices start 12.01am Thursday.
  • Most drivers will not feel it. BUDI95 stays RM1.99 — only the unsubsidised grades move.

Bursa: four straight ex-dividend days

Buy on the ex-date itself and the seller keeps the dividend.Prices normally drop by roughly the dividend on the ex-date — that fall is not the market selling off.
Nothing on Monday, then a run from Tuesday to Friday. Thursday alone has six counters going ex, led by Westports at 14.98 sen.
  • Thursday’s drop is mostly dividends. Six counters go ex at once — part of that fall is not selling.
  • Westports comes with a choice. Its 14.98 sen has a reinvestment option — read the notice instead of ignoring it.
Deposit rates are anchored — and you have time. Bank Negara held the OPR at 2.75% in July and meets next on 3 September, so FD board rates stay put for now. The current promo cluster runs until 31 August, which gives you three weeks to shop. Compare today’s FD rates before the Merdeka campaigns lapse.

What to watch

  • Wed 8.30pmUS inflation for July. It moves gold and the ringgit overnight — June came in at 3.5%.
  • Thu ~5amMSCI’s index review. Additions and deletions force passive funds to buy or sell Malaysian counters.
  • Fri noonQ2 GDP. The advance estimate was +5.8%; this is the full number.
