Malaysia’s biggest bank and one of its biggest conglomerates both reported at 2:30pm today — and that is where the overlap ends. A bank is priced on margins and credit; a conglomerate on cars, machinery and land. So there is no side-by-side here: each result gets its own read— the numbers, the tape’s reaction, and the dividend.

Maybank 2Q FY2026: the margin quarter
- Maybank's engine is margin, not growth. NIM up 10bps to 2.1%, CASA at 41.5% — while loans grew just 2.7%.
- The half-year is flat, honestly. 1H profit of RM5.17bis slightly below last year’s RM5.22b — the quarter beat, the half did not.
- Costs did the work. Overheads fell 2.5% and the cost-to-income ratio sits at 49.1%.
- The tape's verdict: sell the news. A +2.3% pop to RM10.84 by 3:15pm, faded all afternoon to close 10 sen down — a flat half-year priced as exactly that.
- The dividend: 31 sen on a RM10.62 share. That single interim is 2.9% of the price, with 5 sen electable as new shares under the DRP.
Sime Darby FY2026: read the core, not the headline
- The distortion is the land, both years. MVV land gains were RM901m in FY25 against RM434m in FY26 — so the headline comparison flatters last year.
- Data centres reached this result too. Q4 Industrial PBIT of RM348m leaned on data-centre revenue — the same buildout behind our contractor table.
- Management is not celebrating. The outlook line: “we expect market headwinds to continue”— with UMW’s RM219m PBIT leaning on Perodua.
- The tape's first read was the falling headline. Down to RM2.38 within five minutes — a 4% knee-jerk against the lunch close.
- Then the core number landed. An 8.4% reversal to RM2.58by 3:20pm, through the busiest five-minute bar of SIME’s whole day.
- The dividend: 14 sen on a RM2.51 share. The full-year payout is 5.6% of the price — arithmetic on two disclosed numbers, not a forecast of the next one.
Against the FD benchmark — carefully. A 5.6% full-year payout tops the ~3.83% a top Malaysian fixed deposit pays — but an FD cannot fall 20% in a bad year and a share can. Different risks, not different flavours of the same thing. Compare the deposit side on our Maybank FD page, including this month’s promo rates.

Not financial advice. Figures are from The Star’s reporting of Maybank’s 2Q FY2026 results and Sime Darby’s own FY2026 results release, both dated 27 August 2026; prices are Yahoo Finance closes from the same day, and the 2:30pm reaction figures are its 5-minute bars. Dividend percentages are simple division of declared amounts by the latest close — not yields you are promised next year.
