4.28% vs 2.00% — the catch

HSBC FD Promotion 2026: 4.28% Premier Time Deposit vs the 2.00% Board Rate — Is Upgrading Worth It?

RaymondRates.my4 min read

HSBC is advertising 4.28% per annum on a 6-month Premier Time Deposit, running until 30 September 2026. That headline needs a catch first: you must already be — or become — an HSBC Premier customer, which has its own entry bar. HSBC's plain Time Deposit already pays 2.00% to anyone, no upgrade required. Is chasing Premier worth it just for the FD?

The 4.28% headline needs a Premier ticket first

The plain rate is open to anyone. The higher rate is gated behind Premier status — by relationship balance or by mortgage size, not by how much you place.
  • Total relationship balance must sit above the bar at all times, not just on signup day.
  • The home-loan route skips the balance test entirely — a big enough mortgage alone qualifies you.
  • Premier Elite is invitation-only — you can't apply for the top tier yourself.

Promo rate, board rate, bundle ceiling

  • No Premier status or fresh funds needed to open the plain board rate deposit.
  • The bundle ceiling needs a purchase, not just cash — a qualifying wealth or insurance product bought alongside.

  • Your maturity dateThe Premier TD auto-renews at HSBC's prevailing board rate, not the promo one — mark your calendar.
  • Before you applyAsk HSBC for the Premier eligibility fact sheet — a shortfall month costs a RM150 fee.
